On July 26, 2024, Disney Parks across the country will see a wave of blue as disability advocates gather to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event, organized by DAS Defenders, invites disabled park guests, caregivers, and community allies to join in a day of unity and celebration.
Participants are encouraged to wear “parking placard blue” and add a touch of flair to their outfits or mobility devices. This flair serves as a symbol of the often invisible nature of many disabilities, highlighting the unseen challenges faced by millions.
The gathering comes at a time of tension between Disney and the disability community. Recent changes to Disney’s Disability Access Service (DAS) have left many disabled fans feeling hurt and unwelcome. The modifications, announced earlier this spring, were implemented in response to alleged “overuse” of the system.
“Right now, disabled fans of the Disney Parks are hurting,” a spokesperson for DAS Defenders stated. “Over the years, Disney has built a reputation in our community as a destination that is inclusive of guests like us. The Disney Parks were one of few places that allowed us to experience most of the vacation alongside our friends and family despite our disabilities.”
The announcement has led to increased scrutiny of disabled guests, with reports of heightened questioning about mobility devices and service animals. The group also reports that online harassment of disabled content creators has also surged, with some social media users accusing them of misusing the DAS system.
Despite these challenges, DAS Defenders emphasizes that this event is not a protest. Instead, it’s an opportunity for the disability community to come together, show strength, and build connections in a place where they have historically felt welcomed.
“We belong in the parks!” the organization declared. “DAS Defenders hopes to drown out the angry voices with a message of unity, kindness, caring, and support.”
The event will take place at both EPCOT and Disneyland. At EPCOT, participants will gather at Connections Café at 10 am and 7 pm, with plans to share a meal, enjoy a ride, and take a group photo in front of Spaceship Earth. Disneyland attendees will meet at 10 am by the picnic tables outside the park entrance, proceeding to Sleeping Beauty Castle for a photo at noon. An evening meetup is scheduled for 7 pm on Main Street.
Organizers stress that all participants should be mindful of park rules and other guests, emphasizing that the event is about fostering community and commemorating the ADA’s legacy in a positive manner.
